On January 10, 2020 the activities started in the 6 hectares of the pilot site. A team of researchers and specialists from the Cinque Terre National Park, the University of Genoa and ITRB realized a new geomorphological survey procedure of the drystone walls, which will be used to map and classify man-made structures on the basis of their geometry (height, width, thickness, etc.), structural characteristics (stone size, materials/type of rock used for the construction, deformations and collapses, etc.) and other features.
Terraces in the pilot area have been divided into detection units whose limits will be identified by the acquisition of points using GPS instrumentation with centimeter accuracy. The results will then be transferred to the GIS platform and used as georeferenced data for quantitative analysis operations on the territory. For example, it will be possible to investigate possible interactions between the landslides or correlations between territorial parameters, such as the slope and the exposure of the slopes, and the characteristics of the walls.
Members of the Fondazione Manarola participated in the activities, providing insights about the most critical sectors and the characteristics of the structures. Their support in terms of knowledge of the territory has been as always valuable especially for gathering historical information on the area of intervention and on the construction of the walls themselves.
